Building the Next Generation of STEM Talent Across Devon & Cornwall
A fully supported robotics programme connecting schools, colleges and industry through FIRST® Tech Challenge.
Who is this for?
Schools & Colleges
Bring an exciting, industry-connected STEM programme to your students - with fully funded robotics kits, training, curriculum-linked resources and ongoing support throughout the season. No prior robotics experience required.
Participating teams will receive over £3,000 worth of funded support, but this programme is more than funding. We are removing the common barriers that prevent schools and colleges from accessing high-quality STEM enrichment opportunities:
Learning support - content mapped to KS3 & KS4 curriculum areas, Gatsby Benchmarks and the Universal Skills Framework 2.0
Financial support - fully funded robotics equipment and registration, bursaries available for travel and teacher cover
Local access - regional hubs providing nearby training, events and ongoing support
Staff development - in-person CPD, e-learning resources and access to local and national support networks
Long-term sustainability - schools keep their robot kit and can continue participating year after year
Time and expertise - access to industry mentors who can support and guide teams throughout the season
No prior robotics or engineering experience is required, and teams typically meet for just 1-2 hours per week.
Employers, Organisations & Mentors
Help inspire the next generation of engineers, programmers and problem-solvers across Devon & Cornwall. Support teams through mentoring, volunteering, events or partnership opportunities while helping strengthen the region’s future STEM talent pipeline.
Why This Matters for the South West
The South West is home to world-leading marine, defence and technology industries - but many young people across Devon and Cornwall still lack access to the opportunities, networks and experiences that lead into these careers.
FIRST® Tech Challenge South West is changing that. Backed by regional education and industry partners, the programme connects schools, colleges and employers through hands-on robotics, industry mentoring and real-world engineering challenges.
What is FIRST Tech Challenge?
FIRST Tech Challenge is a global robotics programme for young people aged 14–18, where teams design, build and programme robots to compete in an exciting real-world engineering challenge. Alongside technical skills, students develop confidence, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while working with industry mentors and STEM professionals.
